Barbershop Harmony

Barbershop harmony is a uniquely American  musical style with roots in the travelling minstrel shows of the 1800s, Vaudeville of the early 20th century, jazz, ragtime and other musical styles.  There are four voice parts.  The lead singer takes the melody.  The bass provides a foundation frequently on the root or fifth of the chord.  The tenor harmonizes above the lead singer, and the baritone fills in the remaining notes.  The combination of the four voice parts in tune with good vocal quality produces pleasant overtones and undertones described as ringing or buzzing which are the hallmarks of barbershop music. Songs are generally arranged for average voices, so operatic range is not a requirement to enjoy this hobby.  Good hearing and good vocal quality are helpful and the ability to carry a tune is essential, as this is an "a capella" style (no instrumental accompaniment) and chords are tuned by ear.
